Moving to Umbraco

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

As you can probably see, especially if this post is showing up at the top of the list of most recent posts, our website is undergoing a very long-overdue face-lift, and simultaneously (and finally) being moved to a new Content Management System - namely Umbraco version 4.6.1.

I spent a better part of 2010 reading about, installing, customizing and reviewing a variety of .Net CMS - in particular GraffitiCMS, Kooboo, Orchard, MojoPortal and Umbraco.

In the end, despite my initlial difficulty in overcoming the short but steep learning curve, Umbraco came out as the winner for me. Open-source, free (with a paid option for better support), and most of all what appears to be a hard-core group of developers working on it (and with it) - bodes well for its continued success in a very competitive and increasingly crowded market. For any open source product, its strength is really in the community of people that surround it; without  those people, innovation slows - a death sentence for any piece of software.
